Zodiac Flowers
Monthly Theme: What’s your sign?.
This month I thought it would be fun to share the various flowers that coincide with the twelve horoscope signs. I’ve never been a big believer in the wisdom of the horoscope, but it is interesting specifically when there are signs and traits that do indeed match your personality and style. However, I do believe I was born with soil in my veins or at least a lifetime love of gardening, nature, and plant life. My mom, dad, and brother all loved gardening as does my son. It must be in the genes!
The study of astrology and the flowers associated with each zodiac sign is not a new study. For generations, flowers have been linked with astrology. This idea goes hand-in-hand with the belief that stars, the moon, and planets impact life on earth. Personally, I look up at the night sky every evening before I go to sleep.
On the other hand, it might just be an elaborate and successful marketing plan funded by FTD or 1-800-Flowers!
Whether you follow astrology or not, it’s still exciting to learn about the flower paired with your particular zodiac sign. Like flowers, you are uniquely created and designed,
The More You Grow
So, what is the flower connected with your birthday? Let’s go through the list, month-by-month to learn about the twelve constellations and the flowers related with them. In my research, I found different flowers reported by various sources, but these seem to be the most popular picks for zodiac birth flowers.
Capricorn: Pansy (December 22 – January 20)
Capricorns are hard-working, responsible, and reliable people. Likewise, pansies are strong and productive plants (super bloomers). Pansies can survive bitter cold nights as Capricorns fight through whatever challenges life tosses onto their pathways. It is said, both the pansy and Capricorn get better with age!
Some sources claim magnolias and baby’s breath are the birth flower for Capricorns.
Aquarius: Orchid (January 21 – February 19)
Aquarius individuals are charismatic, problem-solvers, and energetic. Orchids are show-stoppers, people are drawn to their exotic beauty, and they can even grow without soil. Both the plant and the person can be considered eccentric. Orchids are one of my favorite plants and my husband’s sign is Aquarius (coincidence or not?!)
Other Aquarius birth flowers include Bird of Paradise and plumeria.
Pisces: Water Lily (February 20 – March 20)
Pisces is the water sign, symbolized by two fish, and people born under this sign are known dreamers. Water lilies are aquatic flowers that grow on the surface of water, they dreamingly and calmly float along with the motion of the water, and are sensitive to the quality of the water they thrive in. Both the sign and the flower are tied to water. My grandma was an easy-going Pisces who grew water lilies in her manmade pond in her front yard.
Pisces are also associated with the daffodil and spider mum.
Aries: Honeysuckle (March 21 – April 20)
Aries people are passionate, confident, and determined by nature. Honeysuckles are fiery like Aries souls and determined to be one of the first flowers to bloom in the spring. Both the plant and the people work toward their goals no matter what or who tries to get in their way.
Some researches claim the tiger lily is the flower associated with Aries.
Taurus: Poppy (April 21 – May 21)
Taurus’ are headstrong (think of Taurus the bull), compassionate, and resilient. Poppies are persistent, strong, and able to grew in harsh conditions. Traditionally, poppies are a symbol of remembrance, which is something Taurus’ know well.
More flowers that represent Taurus are roses, lilacs, and foxgloves.
Gemini: Lavender (May 22 – June 21)
Geminis are lovable, have a strong sense of self, and have many different sides to their personalities (think of a split personality like the Twins that represent this sign). Lavender is a beloved flower by both people and pollinators, stands tall, and have many different uses from edible to medicinal.
A few other flowers that symbolize Gemini are lily-of-the-valley and azaleas.
Cancer: White Rose (June 22 – July 22)
Cancers are pure of heart, pay attention to detail, and are sensitive. White roses represent purity, display delicate petals, and beauty. Cancers put on an armor to protect their hearts while roses grow thorns to protect their flowers. Once the Cancer or the white rose opens up, everyone will see the layers of hidden beauty.
Other Cancer flowers are white carnations and jasmine.
Leo: Sunflower (July 23 – August 22)
Leos are sociable, happy-go-lucky, and outrageously outgoing. Sunflowers are the ideal happy-looking flower, they seem to be smiling as they boldly face the daily sunlight, and radiate warmth. Both the person and the plant do not shy away from being in the limelight. Each are strong and vibrant like Leo the Lion.
A few other flowers that symbolize Leo are marigolds and dahlias.
Virgo: Chrysanthemum (August 23 – September 23)
Virgos are known perfectionists (takes one to know one – I’m a Virgo!), reliable nature, and are fiercely loyal friends to those they love. Chrysanthemums’ petals are almost perfect, they are prolific bloomers, and grow well alongside other flowers or in arrangements. Both the plant and the person tend to blend into the background with their unique style and tidy structure and are able to thrive where planted.
Other flowers that represent Virgo include asters and buttercups.
Libra: Tea Rose (September 24 – October 23)
Libras are fair and balanced like the scale that represents the sign. They are civic-minded, easy-going, and calm by nature. Tea roses symbolize love, peace, and divine elegance. Other meanings assigned to this flower include new hope and positivity. Both the plant and the person can be quite romantic and bring cheer to those around them.
Additional flowers associated with this sign are: hydrangeas and gardenias.
Scorpio: Geranium (October 24 – November 22)
Scorpios always have another new layer of their personalities for others to discover, keep small social circles, and are brave souls. Geraniums uncover multiple petals and blooms, there are wild geraniums as well as cultivated varieties, and they symbolize protection. Geraniums repel snakes so maybe they can help the Scorpio to repel temptations and jealousy.
A couple more Scorpio flowers include black-eyed Susans and anemones.
Sagittarius: Carnation (November 23 – December 21)
Sagittarius’ are open yet complex, independent, and persevere through tough situations, Carnations have open-yet-layered blooms, they can fill a garden space independently or amongst other flowers, and survive bleak weather. I’m not surprised that people often give carnations to help others celebrate happy times or get through tough times.
Two more Capricorn flowers are pansies and African violets.
